June is Home Safety Month. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), there were approximately 93,200 unintentional-injury related deaths occurring in the home and community, in 2013. Report to the Nation: Protecting Children in Your Home was released in February, 2015, and found that parents are largely unaware of the biggest dangers to children in the home. Of course, adults are at risk too.
What Will You Do?
We encourage all of you to participate in Home Safety Month in ways that are most important for you and your family. To get you started, here are some issues to consider:
- Fall prevention
- Fire safety
- Electrical safety
- Child safety
- Emergency preparedness
- Poisons in the home
Making a List
Get together with other household members and make a list of safety concerns that are important to your family. Encourage everyone to participate by coming up with at least one potential danger in your home that needs to be addressed.
This can be as simple as checking the batteries in your smoke alarms or lowering the temperature on your water heater, or a larger more comprehensive project such as protecting your home from wildfires or building a better fence to keep kids from wandering into the swimming pool.
Post the list somewhere that everyone will see it and be reminded of the upcoming tasks and problem areas. This gives everyone the chance to do their part at their convenience.
Alternatively, you can make lists of the tasks that each person will handle, and a list of the projects you will tackle together as a family. Make it fun by planning something special as a reward when tasks are completed.
