- Food Poisoning – Whether it is your first date or you want to do something special for Valentine’s Day, you may be tempted to get adventurous with cooking a meal for the object of your affection. If you are a novice cook, learn the basics of safe food handling first. Even the most seasoned cooks and those opting to eat out may want to skip riskier Valentine’s Day standbys such as raw oysters.
- Cooking Injuries – Cooking injuries are another risk for lovers who are inexperienced in the kitchen. Learn to use your tools before going crazy in the kitchen, and don’t let distractions lead to a kitchen fire.
- Drinking and Driving – When you’re in love, the hours fly by, and you may not notice how much you’ve been drinking. Even if you don’t normally drink, you may find yourself caught up in the moment. Always have a plan for how you will get yourself home and do not make the mistake of driving your intoxicated date home after you have also had too much to drink.
- Pedestrian Accidents – In today’s world, for many people love means excessive texting. Even more excessive than usual. Unfortunately, when your eyes are glued to the screen, you are more likely to wander out into traffic, fall down stairwells, trip over obstacles, or run into other people and objects.
- Illnesses -When the one you love is feeling under the weather your first instinct is to provide comfort. However, try to hold back on the kissing and hand holding until the contagious period has passed.
- Poor Judgment – Using brain scans, researchers have found that our frontal cortex shuts down when we are in love. That’s the part of the brain responsible for judgment.
- Hickey-induced Stroke – OK, so there is only one documented case so far, but who knows how many time this may have happened. In 2011, a New Zealand woman had a small stroke after a blood clot in a major artery in her throat broke loose. The clot is believed to be caused by trauma to the artery from the suction that caused her hickey.
- Subarachnoid Hemorrhage – Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) occurs when blood vessels burst in the brain. It can be brought on by sexual activity. Symptoms include a sudden, severe headache, stroke-like symptoms such as slurred speech, and convulsions. SAH is a medical emergency and can be fatal.
- Heart Attack – What better way to discover that you had a previously undiagnosed heart condition than to find yourself in the ER after an unusually vigorous roll in the hay?
- Broken Heart Syndrome – Finally, a particularly difficult break-up can put you in the hospital too. The sudden stress can cause a condition called stress-induced cardiomyopathy, also known as broken heart syndrome. The symptoms mimic a heart attack and can be life-threatening, but most people make a full and speedy recovery.
