October 21, 2015 is Back to The Future Day. It is the day that Doc Brown and Marty McFly travel to in Back to The Future 2. The year they departed was 1985. The film’s version of 2015 got some things right, and a lot of things wrong about life today. Thirty years ago may not seem like ancient history, but what are the odds that you could make it through 1985 unscathed? Here are some tips for surviving your trip to 1985.
Forget Flying
1985 was one of the deadliest years in aviation history, with at least 10 major aviation disasters including a mid-air collision that killed 94 people, the bombing of Air India Flight 182, and the hijacking of EgyptAir Flight 648. August, 1985 was the deadliest month in all of aviation history.
So, Maybe I Should Drive Instead?
There is good news and bad news for those planning to drive in 1985. The good news is, you don’t have to worry about being hit by someone who is texting or taking a selfie. The bad news is, if you don’t know how to find your destination, you’ll have to stop at a gas station and look at a map. One that’s drawn on actual paper. You can find it in the back of the phone book that’s attached to the payphone.
The other bad news? Traffic fatalities were significantly higher. There were 39,196 fatal crashes killing 43,825 in 1985 as compared to 32,719 killed in traffic accidents in 2013. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) there were 18,125 fatalities involving alcohol in 1985. That was down from 21,113 in 1982. In 2013, only 10,076 people died in alcohol-related accidents, but that is still 31% of all traffic fatalities.
It’s clearly unsafe to travel through time in a DeLorean – on or off the road! If you’ve been hurt in an accident, time traveling or otherwise, we always recommend that you contact an accident attorney. Time may be limited.
