Reduce Your Risk of Catching and Spreading the Flu
News about the flu may make you want to hole up at home and avoid leaving the house at all during flu season, but for most of us that is not an option. There are many things that you can do to reduce your risk of catching the flu as well as colds and other contagious illnesses. And if you do catch the flu, it’s important to do what you can to avoid spreading it to others.
- Wash your hands regularly with regular soap and water. Antibacterial soaps do not have any added benefit in warding of the flu and other viruses. Scrub for 20 to 30 seconds.
- Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers, when soap and water are not available. Remember to keep hand sanitizer out of the reach of children. It is a deadly poison if ingested.
- Avoid close contact with sick people when possible.
- Frequently clean surfaces and objects that are likely to be contaminated, such as door knobs, phones, and remote controls.
- If you at to experience flu symptoms at work, go home as soon as you can.
- Do not send sick kids to school or daycare.
- If you have the flu, or flu-like illness, you should stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone, without the use of fever-reducing medicine.
- Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze and cough. Do not sneeze or cough into your hand. Use a tissue and throw it away immediately, or if a tissue is not available, cough into your elbow.
- Avoid touching your nose, mouth, and eyes.
