Dangers of Listeria Food Poisoning

Listeria is a bacteria that can lead to a serious infection. The disease tends to affect pregnant women, newborns, and adults with weakened immune systems, like the elderly.

Listeriosis is a serious problem and should be treated as such. In October 2015 there were at least four recalls in the United States due to listeria contamination.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention created the following infographic to help inform the public about the dangers of listeria.

Symptoms of a listeria infection can include:

  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea

Often, symptoms may start days after you’ve consumed contaminated food but may take longer. If the infection spreads to your nervous system, signs may include:

  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion or changes in alertness
  • Loss of balance
  • Convulsions

If you or a loved one has symptoms of listeria poisoning, seek medical help immediately. For more information visit the CDC online.
