More than 200 home fires start with Christmas trees each year. Real trees are more likely to catch on fire than artificial trees, but artificial trees can also cause fires. When real trees are properly maintained and kept moist they do not burn easily. That may explain why more Christmas tree fires start after the holiday than before. A dry Christmas tree can be devoured by flames and ignite your home in under a minute.
Choose the Right Tree
When choosing a real tree, make sure it is well hydrated. The needles should be green and they should not fall off when touched or if you shake the tree. If you opt for an artificial tree, make sure it is fire retardant.
Caring for a Real Tree
Keeping your tree well hydrated is the number one thing you can do to prevent a Christmas tree fire. Choose a stand that holds water. Before placing the tree, cut one to two inches off the base. This helps the tree absorb the water. Water your tree daily. When it starts dropping needles, it is dried out and needs to go.
Placing and Decorating Your Christmas Tree
Whether you have a real or artificial tree, you can prevent a fire by following some basic safety tips:
- Keep the tree at least three feet away from all heat sources, including the fireplace, space heaters, and candles.
- Make sure the tree is secured to the wall so it cannot fall over, onto a heat source.
- Never use real, lit candles to decorate a tree, even if you have a fire retardant, artificial tree.
- Only use lights that have been tested by an independent laboratory.
- Inspect the cords for nicks and frayed wires, even if they are brand new.
- Do not connect too many strings of lights together. Your lights should have come with instructions that tell you the maximum number that can be connected.
- Always unplug the lights before you go to bed or leave the house.
