Super Bowl parties are an American tradition for football fans and non-fans alike. Make sure everyone gets home safe and healthy by following these Super Bowl party safety tips.
Food Safety
Whether you are hosting a party or taking food for a potluck, basic food safety can save the day.
- Ask about allergies before you plan your cooking, if you can. While some people have food sensitivities that can make them ill, others have a life-threatening allergic reaction. If you can’t find out before-hand, do ask guests as they arrive and let them know if any of your dishes or snacks contain their allergens.
- Basic safe food handling always applies. Food poisoning can ruin your party, but in some cases symptoms don’t set in until days later. Check out the USDA’s safety tips for serving food to groups.
Beverages
Alcohol is standard at Super Bowl parties, so you need to know how to minimize the fallout.
- Make sure you have a variety of food choices for guests, and encourage them to snack. Try making the rounds with some snack trays whenever there is a break in the action. Keeping your guests well-fed will help keep your guests a little more sober.
- Have a variety of non-alcoholic beverages and bottled water available so your non-drinkers can enjoy themselves and those who are drinking can pace themselves.
- Have a plan for getting your drunk guests home safely, or letting them sleep it off at your place. Hopefully, your guests will have designated drivers, but you need to have numbers on-hand for taxi and ride-share services just in case. Many areas now have sober/safe ride services that will drive people home for a discount or for free. Get the details before your party.
