Violence at political events, in the U.S., is not new, but it certainly seems to be a presiding theme this election cycle. And, injuries can occur anytime people gather, whether as a result of violence or a more mundane accident, such as slip and fall. If you are injured at a political rally, you may be able to recover compensation for your medical expenses, lost income, and other losses. An experienced accident attorney can determine who can be held liable in your unique case. There are certain steps you should take to protect your legal rights.
When it Happens
There are certain steps you should take immediately after you are injured, if at all possible. If you are not able to stay and do this yourself, due to your injuries or if you are removed from the rally, ask a friend or someone nearby to do it for you:
- Get contact information from witnesses, especially anyone who was taking video or pictures.
- Take pictures of the area where you were injured and anything that may have contributed to your accident, such as hazardous conditions, where applicable.
- Take pictures of your injuries.
- Get statements from witnesses then and there if you can.
- Take note of any media outlets covering the event so that you can request video they may have of the incident.
After You Are Injured
- Get medical attention right away.
- Keep all or your receipts and other documents, such as ticket stubs, related to the incident, your injuries, and the event you attended. This includes receipts that prove you were there, as well as receipts for any expenses caused by your injuries.
- Contact an experienced accident attorney right away.
- Contact witnesses to get statements and request copies of any video or pictures they may have taken.
- Get a copy of any surveillance video as soon as possible, before it is lost or destroyed.
- Request copies of any ambulance and police reports.
