Utah Train Accident Highlights Railroad Track Dangers

Five-Year-Old Killed in Utah Train Accident Highlights Importance of Teaching Kids about the Railroad Track Dangers

7978609_mOn November 9, five-year-old Emanuel Romero Rivera was struck by a train in Spanish Fork, Utah. He died from his injuries. He was playing on the track with his sister and cousin when the train came around the bend. The others escaped safely, but he froze, and the train couldn’t stop in time to avoid hitting him. Kids are naturally drawn to trains and to train tracks. All the signs and barriers in the world will not keep them away if they do not fully understand the danger. Sadly, in some cases, they will still play where they should not, but we can do our best to minimize that risk.

Tips for Teaching Your Kids about the Dangers of Railroad Tracks

Unlike cars, trains cannot stop suddenly. The only way to avoid being struck is to stay out of their way at all times. Remember that telling your kids about the dangers of trains, and the rules for staying safe will hold no sway unless you follow the rules yourself. Encourage your children to set a good examples for others and pass along what they have learned about trains and railroad track safety.

Basic Train and Railroad Track Rules

  • Only cross at marked crossings, even if it means talking a longer walk
  • Always obey the signs and signals, even if you do not see or hear the train
  • Always look both ways before crossing, even if the alarms are not activated
  • Never try to race or beat the train
  • Stay at least ten big steps away from the track when a train is passing
  • After a train passes, look both ways to make sure there is not another one coming before you cross
  • Never play or walk on the tracks
