Mecca Hajj Stampede

On September 24, 2015, more than 2,200 pilgrims were killed in a stampede during the Hajj in Mina, Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The exact number of deaths is unknown. The Associated Press reports that at least 2,411 people were killed. The highest estimate so far puts the death toll at at least 2,431. The Hajj is the annual pilgrimage to Mecca that all adult Muslims are required to make at least once in their lifetime if they are physically and financially able. It is one of the largest annual gatherings in the world.

Dong Fang Zhi Xing (Easter Star) Cruise Ship Sinking

On June 1, 2015, a river cruise ship capsized in China, killing 442 of the 454 people on board. The Dong Fang Zhi Xing, or Eastern Star in English, was travelling on the Yangtze River, when it is believed that it was hit by a tornado, causing the ship to capsize and sink in about 50 feet of water.

Accra Explosion

An explosion and fire that started at a gas station in Accra, Ghana, killed more than 250 people, on June 4, 2015. Nearly 100 people were taking shelter from heavy rains and flooding in the station when it is believed that a portable generator started the fire that led to the explosion. Due to the flooding there was a mixture of water and fuel. The fuel may have come from a truck that was parked at the station and an underground gas tank that cracked under the pressure of the water. The water carried the fuel to the fire, causing the explosion, and the fire spread to surrounding buildings.

Multicar Pileup on Michigan’s I-94

In Michigan, nearly 200 vehicles were involved in a multicar pileup on I-94, west of Battle Creek. The massive wreck occurred on January 9, 2015, during white-out conditions. A truck carrying fireworks caught on fire. Another big rig involved was carrying 22 tons of formic acid.

One man was killed and another 22 people were hospitalized. Considering the number of vehicles involved, 193, and the presence of hazardous materials and explosives, it is amazing that there weren’t far more serious injuries and deaths.

Tennessee Train Derailment

A train derailment in Maryville, Tennessee required the evacuation of over 5,000 people. The train was carrying a toxic and flammable substance called acrylonitrile. Thankfully, no one was killed, but 52 people were injured by exposure to the fumes.
