The federal government reports that 10% percent of all motor vehicle crashes causing injury involved a distracted driver in 2011. Twenty-one percent of those drivers ages 16-19 killed in accidents in 2011 were on a cell phone, the government says.
But this statistic about texting will truly scare you: Sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent-at 55 mph-of driving the length of an entire football field, blind. Engaging in so-called visual-manual subtasks– meaning using any handheld device in any way– increased the risk of getting into a crash by three times no matter teh age of the driver.
