Texting While Driving Makes You Blind

Every year thousands of people are injured or killed because of texting. It seems that modern technology has outpaced our survival instincts.

Because text messaging requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver, it is by far the most alarming distraction.   The federal government reports that 10% percent of all motor vehicle crashes causing injury involved a distracted driver in 2011.  Twenty-one percent of those drivers ages 16-19 killed in accidents in 2011 were on a cell phone, the government says.

But this statistic about texting will truly scare you: Sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent-at 55 mph-of driving the length of an entire football field, blind.  Engaging in so-called visual-manual subtasks– meaning using any handheld device in any way– increased the risk of getting into a crash by three times no matter teh age of the driver.
