AAA Expects Over 100 Million Year-End Holiday Travelers in 2015

The American Automobile Association (AAA) expects more than 100 million Americans to travel for the year-end holidays in 2015. If the prediction is correct, it will be the highest number on record. More than 90% of travelers will be driving, which means you need to be extra vigilant on the roads this year, whether you are going out of town or driving locally. AAA defines year-end holiday travel as taking a trip of 50 miles or more away from home anytime from December 23, 2015 through January 3, 2016.

All Modes of Travel to Increase this Holiday Season

With lower gas prices and higher incomes, AAA expects an increase in all modes of travel this year and predicts that:

  • 5 million will drive, 1.4% more than last year
  • 8 million will fly, a 0.7% increase
  • 4 million travelers will choose other modes of transportation, an increase of 2.4%

Gas Prices and Airfares Down

Gas prices are dropping and many Americans who could not afford to travel in recent years are ready to take advantage of the opportunity to see friends and family. On December 21, 2015, the national average gas price finally dropped below $2.00/gallon, the lowest it has been since March 25, 2009.

Airfares have gone down some from last year, too. AAA says fares are down 6% from last year for the top 40 domestic flight routes.

Staying Safe

Plan ahead to stay safe on the roads this holiday season:

  • Check the weather and road conditions for your route
  • Keep an emergency kit in your car
  • Only drive when you are well rested
  • Make sure you have a designated driver or can spend the night if you will be drinking alcohol
